I modified a scanner to take pictures using cardboard, duct tape, and a Fresnel lens. Once I get a scanner that I can hack apart and really modify, I hope to get better pictures. What happens is this: light enters a cardboard box via the lens in the front. The light is focused by means of the box: it is actually two boxes that slide in and out to adjust the focal length. The focused light falls onto the glass surface of the scanner, right were a document would be, so the scanner reads that light, as opposed to reflected light as usual. The movement of the scan head combined with movement in the picture makes for great effects.
